A few weeks back, when we knew we were going, we got a PO box in West Sacramento to facilitate us applying for jobs out west. Leaving from MN to CA is a big venture, and a big risk. We are selling all of our stuff and looking forward to a new adventure. One filled with promise, excitement, and a little nervousness as we try to succeed in what is uncharted territory for us. I have been to California just once before and my wife, Di, has never been. This is my journey to get a job at Netflix after all previous attempts from home in MN have failed.
Tomorrow Di and I will leave for the casino and try to put all of these negative thoughts aside and not worry about how much there is still left to be done. Leaving a life behind is actually a bit more stressful for myself than for her since she has done so 7 years ago when she left Sri Lanka.
A few weeks ago when the realization hit me that we are actually doing this, I started having panic attacks and my heart began to hurt. We are leaving with nothing but the clothes in a suitcase and not much more than will fit in in our car.
Tonight we also said goodbye to my nephew and nieces. Not even sure when I will see them again, it was a bittersweet moment. But to achieve something worth doing, it absolutely must not be easy.
So far Di has been diligent in looking for a job but I have not had the same focus. I have been, admittedly, treating this time as sort of a vacation since the last class for my MBA has just been completed and my job is done.
All of this is just setting the story for what will surely be a great adventure.
Who are we?
Mitch and Di Heid are a newlywed couple from St. Cloud, Minnesota. Both recently received their masters degrees in business, they look to apply that trade out west in California.
Di is a young woman from the island country of Sri Lanka where she left seven years ago to attend college and receive her bachelors in Accounting and her Master’s degree in business. She has never lived in a U.S. city larger than 60,000. Di has spent her college years doing event planning and advising and training students in that trade. As she heads out to California she will be looking for jobs in Event Planning or possibly a position in Student Life in the world of Higher Education.
Mitch is a recent graduate with his MBA. He has spent his entire life living in MN with most of it spent in St. Cloud where he attending both his undergraduate and master’s programs. He has two undergraduate degrees in Film Studies and Creative writing and now his Master’s of Business. He has also spent the last few years planning the movie program on the campus and he too has trained and advised event planners. In fact, that is where Mitch and Di met! While he has traveled west to many different cities before, he has also never lived in a town of more than 60,000.
Day 2 of this week will find us at Grand Casino Hinckley. We will be sure to try and blog from there as well.
